Fraxel for "raised" scars?

Recommended Posts

I called a center that does Fraxel repair but the operator said if it's "raised", they can't do it.

Does raised mean it's more like a bump, and not perfectly flat or lower than the rest of the skin?

If so, is there any reason to look into getting fraxel before MHT for covering scar? I don't know if all places are the same

To the best of my knowledge, the information you have been given is incorrect.

I know a few people here have struggled to find a laser specialist who are willing to use Fraxel on hair transplant scars, as that is not the purpose for which Fraxel was originally intended. Might be prudent to wait for replies from members who have had first hand experience of Fraxel

Hey, I have had about 4 fraxel procedures on my scar several years ago. I'd say the info they gave you was incorrect. It can be used to flatten out scars raised or indented. That said, the results for me were no where near worth the money paid. And several other practitioners turned me down, as they didn't think the results would be very substantial. I have talked with a few others who have had it done and had great results, so it looks like it depends on your skin and the levels used maybe. I'd say from most I've seen, results are mediocre on scars like ht scars.

interesting info, thanks for sharing mattador.  info on fraxel over ht scar is scarce on the internet, and yours is the first case ive read of it not really helping (out of maybe 5 that said it did).

do you remember what type you had?  i think there are 3 main types -- restore, dual, and repair... with "repair" being the most aggressive.

i've been contemplating getting fraxel on my scar before i get mht... can't make up my mind.  If i got it, i would probably do the "repair' type so that i would only have to have one session.  Pretty expensive though, i think it's around $900.

Remember that fraxel is primarily intended for acne scarring and other minor imperfections. Most clinics you call will have never treated a hair transplant scar before, so the information you're likely to receive could be sketchy at best.

That's a good point about the different type of fraxel lasers. I had mine done several years ago and at the time I heard nothing about that, and honestly don't know which one they used and don't remember the intensity. I know they increased the intensity as we went. At the time I saw a practitioner who used it on a lot of scars other than acne, and just didn't think it would be significant for the price, and I heard that from several. She said she would do it if I wanted to try. I also wasn't looking at getting MHT at the time and was just shaving my head, so that plays a big factor. So the price of 4-5 fraxel treatments on a plane scar, didn't equal the results I saw (if any results). I frequented another forum at the time where a few had it done and the results were mixed. Some had my experience, but one guy had such good results he could just shave his head. I suppose any bit of improvement in color and flatness is worth it before MHT, if you have the money. Sorry for the long post, but that was my experience.

I just asked a local dermatologist who had a Fraxel to try it on my HT scars 3 years ago. He only charged me $100.00 per session. Each time he turned up the intensity and the 4th  time it was at the max and quite painful even with the pain reducing cream they give you. That said i did get smoothing of the scars. Maybe had I done 10 sessions the scars would have reduced more, not sure. In itself it was not a total solution of course but was helpful. This doctor is in Chicago. I am going to see him soon to show him my MHT results. I know since he has accepted others  with hT scars now that he saw it does help people. Not all doctors would be willing to try I expect as this is such an unusual request from a small group of HT patients who would think to ask for it.

Great info.  Do you happen to remember the type of fraxel laser they used?  I think there are 3 types... "restore" - "dual" (both non-ablative), and "repair" (ablative).

Also how much time was needed between the fraxel sessions?

Thanks!
